Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), originally Cleveland Municipal Airport, opened on July 1, 1925, and is one of the oldest continuously operating municipally owned airports in the United States at the same location.

It has pioneered numerous aviation innovations that became industry standards.

  • First municipal airport in the U.S. — It opened as one of the earliest city-owned airports, built on 1,040 acres. The first operations included U.S. Air Mail service, with Henry Ford's airline starting the nation's first commercial air-freight route between Cleveland and Detroit that same year.

  • National Air Races host — From 1929 to 1949, CLE hosted the prestigious National Air Races, drawing top pilots and massive crowds.

  • World’s first airfield lighting system (1930) — Enabled safer night operations.

  • First air traffic control tower with radio communication (1929–1930) — The airport featured the U.S.'s first control tower (a glass-enclosed structure on the terminal) and airplane-to-tower radio system. Claude King, a key innovator, helped develop these

Today, CLE is Ohio’s busiest airport, handling around 10 million passengers annually and ranking around 47th in the U.S. It serves as a key regional hub within a day’s drive of nearly half the U.S. population.

The airport is undergoing a major modernization (CLEvolution) with new terminal designs.
