The founding fathers of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway saw their facility as something more than a racetrack. The first event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in 1909 wasn’t an automobile race - it was a hot-air balloon competition.A year later an airshow was held that featured the Wright brothers with their latest iteration of flying machine.
During World War I, the track was used as a landing and flight test field and hangars built on site helped house aircraft.
Indianapolis Municipal Airport opened in 1931, replacing the older Stout Field as the primary city airport. The airport was initially built on about 320 acres of land in the southwestern edge of the city, with an additional 627 acres reserved for future expansions at the airport.
In 1976, the airport was renamed Indianapolis International Airport and occupies 7,700 acres. IND is home to the second largest FedEx Express hub in the world and consistently ranks among the top 10 busiest U.S. airports in terms of air cargo throughput.
