The Lafayette/Purdue University airport has a strong tie to Amelia Earhart — The legendary aviator joined Purdue in 1935 as a career counselor for women and advisor to the aeronautics department. She prepared her famous Lockheed Electra 10-E (funded by the Purdue Research Foundation as a "flying laboratory") for her ill-fated 1937 around-the-world flight attempt in Hangar 1. Today, the airport's modern passenger terminal (opened in 2025) is named the Amelia Earhart Terminal in her honor.
