Charles Hamilton demonstrated the city's first airplane in 1910. Herb Munter, a self-educated engineer, was building his own aircraft on Harbor Island by 1915. His efforts attracted the interest of William E. Boeing and Navy Lt. Conrad Westervelt, who hired Munter to help them build their first airplane, the B&W, in 1916.
In 1966 Boeing decided that jumbo jets were the future and acquired Paine Field, an old wartime military base in Everett. It built the assembly plant for the company's new jumbo jet, the Boeing 747 which remains the largest building by volume in the world. The first 747 rolled out in 1969.
